In Perspective (HIP)

The Health In Perspective (HIP) program focuses on smoking prevention
and cessation for young females aged 10 to 15 years. It is an active learning
program designed to help adolescent females develop healthy and active
lifestyles.
There are 3 distinctive features of the HIP program:
- Gender-Specific: targets females aged 10 to 15 years
- Setting: designed for easy use by recreation professionals, active
living leaders, intramural coordinators, peer leaders or mediators,
and student leaders; this program can be integrated into any recreational,
intramural or classroom setting.
- Method of Delivery: peer led intervention program; takes a youth by
youth approach; uses physical activity to deliver a healthy lifestyle
message
The HIP program includes teaching units and activities designed to:
- increase self esteem
- enhance parent-youth communication
- educate about the health effects of tobacco use
- motivate females to be physically active
- create awareness about tobacco and the environment
- enhance healthy eating patterns
- educate females about how to reduce stress
- increase awareness about the influences of the media
The HIP program is available for use from the Community Health Services.
