Pandemic Influenza (Flu)

Pandemic flu is a worldwide outbreak of influenza. Many governments and agencies, including Lambton County, are busy developing emergency plans for how they will respond to the impact of the next pandemic flu when it happens.

What is pandemic flu?

Influenza pandemics occur when all four of the following occur:

  1. A new influenza A virus is detected.
  2. Human-to-human transmission happens easily.
  3. The new virus causes serious clinical illness and death.
  4. The population has little or no immunity to the virus.

This web page provides useful information about pandemic flu, and links to various resources.

What is being done to reduce the impact of the next pandemic?

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) global influenza preparedness plan has been prepared to assist WHO Member States and those responsible for public health, medical and emergency preparedness to respond to threats and occurrences of pandemic influenza.

  • The Public Health Agency of Canada has developed a Canadian Pandemic Influenza Plan that details how Canada needs to prepare for and respond to pandemic flu.

  • Ontario ’s Ministry of Health and Long Term Care has also developed an Influenza Pandemic Plan based on international and national standards.

  • At the local level, the County of Lambton has developed the Lambton County Pandemic Influenza Plan that will be reviewed and updated as new information becomes available.
