  Vaccination of Pets

This page was reviewed or revised on Friday, August 14, 2009.

Most people don't know that Southern Ontario has one of the highest concentrations of animal rabies in all of North America. And, did you know that most people who come in contact with rabies are exposed to it by their household pets?

To protect your family and your pets against rabies it is now a legal requirement in Lambton County to ensure that all dogs and cats are regularly vaccinated for rabies.

  • The Rabies Immunization Regulation came into effect in Lambton County in 1994 for dogs and cats.

  • This regulation requires all dogs and cats 3 months of age and older under your care and custody to be immunized and re-immunized against rabies.

  • To make it work for all of us, low cost vaccination clinics are held in various municipalities throughout the year. Veterinarians will also reduce their fees for those special clinics. Watch for clinics in your area!

  • You will receive an immunization certificate and a rabies vaccination I.D. tag for your animal. The due date for re-vaccination will be marked on the certificate.

  • Failure to immunize or reimmunize your pet may result in a fine of $90.00 under the Provincial Offences Act or a maximum of $5000.00 under the Health Protection and Promotion Act.
