CHECKLIST

When breastfeeding, call for help if I have questions or problems with breastfeeding such as:

  1. My baby is not peeing (urinating) at least six (6) times in a 24-hour period.

  2. My baby is between 1-4 weeks old and is not having two (2) or more bowel movements in each 24-hour period.

  3. My baby is not attaching well to my breast or is not feeding well.

  4. My baby is not gaining enough weight.  A breast-fed baby may take 2-3 weeks to regain birth weight and then gain 3-7 ounces per week or 1-1˝ pounds/month.

  5. I think I may not have enough milk.

  6. My baby is sleeping and difficult to wake up to feed, or my baby is breastfeeding less than eight (8) times in 24 hours.

  1. My breasts are hard and full (engorged) or I am having breast or nipple pain; breastfeeding should not hurt.

  2. My baby has yellow skin and eyes and is not feeding well.

  3. I have a breast infection or have plugged ducts.  Your breasts may have hard, red or sore areas, or you may feel like you have the flu.

  4. Call a public health nurse at 519 383-8331 ext. 3564, or toll-free 1-800-667-1839 if you have questions about this information or other breastfeeding topics.
