Healthy Smiles Ontario (HSO) Fact Sheet

What is Healthy Smiles Ontario (HSO)?

Healthy Smiles Ontario is a no-cost dental program for children and youth 17 years old and younger who do not have access to dental coverage.

HSO is delivered by local health units across Ontario including the County of Lambton at 160 Exmouth St., Point Edward, ON.

If eligible, children may visit a dental professional who accepts Healthy Smiles Ontario patients.

Who is eligible?

  • Child/ youth is 17 years of age or younger.
  • Must live in Ontario.
  • Members of a household with an "Adjusted Family Net Income" of $20,000 per year or less. Please call if you have questions.
  • No access to any form of dental coverage, including other government-funded programs, such as Ontario Works.

What is covered?

The HSO program covers regular visits to a licensed dental care provider - such as a dentist or dental hygienist - for checkups, cleanings, fillings, X-rays, scaling, and preventive services.

What is not covered?

Things such as braces and cosmetic dentistry (whitening) are not covered.

Documents required:

The applicant must complete a form and show one of the following documents*:

  1. Annual Goods and Services Tax Credit Entitlement Notice
  2. Annual Canada Child Tax Benefit and Ontario Child Benefit Notice (most recent tax year)
  3. Annual Ontario Sales Tax Credit (OSTC) Notice

In addition to showing one of the above documents, the applicant must also show the following documents:

ID issued by the government for the applicant* and for each child*:

  • Valid Ontario Health Card (with photo)
  • Valid Ontario Health Card (without photo)
