Making Healthy Choices!

Recent studies have shown that making healthy lifestyle changes can head off over 90% of type 2 diabetes. Another study says that the changes could reduce the risk of getting the disease by 58% even among people who already show signs of developing it.

Researchers at Harvard School of Public Health concluded, 91% of cases of diabetes among people they studied could have been prevented by the following: being active, eating right, and avoiding drinking, smoking, and being overweight.

Being overweight was the strongest predictor of diabetes – 61% of cases could be due to weight problems.

Are you at a Healthy Body Weight?

There is no ideal weight for everyone of the same height. This is because we all have a very different genetic background and as a result come in all shapes and sizes. So, the good news is that rather than have one particular weight for height, there is now a range of weights that is healthy for your height.

Today, health experts use your weight and height to calculate a measure called the Body Mass Index (BMI). The BMI determines if your weight is healthy for your height. This is just one guide to assess your weight. It is only accurate for people aged 20 – 65 years whose body composition and size are constant. BMI is not to be used by children, pregnant or breastfeeding women, adolescents, seniors, very muscular people or endurance athletes.
