Viral Meningitis

What is Viral Meningitis?

Meningitis means inflammation of the covering of the brain and spinal cord. Viral meningitis therefore means inflammation caused by a virus.

There are many different types of viruses that can cause meningitis. One of the most common and one that has caused recent clusters in Lambton County is ECHOVIRUS 30.

This virus is the most common cause of summer colds and sore throats. On very rare occasions and in certain susceptible individuals, the virus can cause meningitis.

Symptoms

The symptoms usually include fever, headache and/or stiff neck, and severe nausea and vomiting.

Incubation and Duration

The incubation period is 3 to 6 days and symptoms generally last 7 to 10 days, followed by complete recovery.

Transmission

The virus is normally found in the intestines of humans and can be spread from person to person through fecal-oral transmission and possibly through respiratory secretions.

Treatment

Because this type of meningitis is caused by a virus, there is no specific treatment or cure, other than fluid replacement and fever and pain medication.

Prevention

The most important way to prevent this infection is VERY CAREFUL HANDWASHING, especially after a bowel movement and before preparing, handling, or eating food. It's wise also to avoid sharing food, glasses, pop cans, or eating utensils.
