NEVER accept an open drink.

Drug-assisted sexual assault is not new but has increased at parties, on campuses and at bars. While attention focuses on date-rape drugs like Rohypnol, GHB and Ketamine, the most common and widespread date rape drug, alcohol, is still not always recognized as a threat.

Almost half of the sexual assaults young adults experience is under the influence of alcohol. (The Survey of Unwanted Sexual Experiences Among University of Alberta Students, 2001)

The use of date rape drugs like Rohypnol, GHB and Ketamine shows that sexual assaults are planned and a way for predators to disable their victim and to make sure they cannot resist the assault or recall enough details.

*Consent for sexual activity CANNOT be obtained when a person is impaired by alcohol or other drugs.

Never accept open drinks (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) at bars or parties from people you do not know or do not trust; including drinks that come in a glass. If drinking from a bottle, open it yourself or watch the bartender pour it.

Never leave your drink unattended. If you ask someone to watch it, make sure it is someone you trust.

Never go to a bar, party or social event alone. Go with a good friend.

Be aware of what is going on around you. Be wary of people who tamper with your drink, or insist on giving you a drink.

Never leave a bar or club with someone you have just met, especially if you feel drunk.

If you think you were drugged, tell your friends and get medical help.

Never drink anything with an unusual taste or appearance (i.e. salty taste, excessive foam or residue).

      Never mix drugs and alcohol.
