Bicycle Commuting Tips

This page was reviewed or revised on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 3:21 PM

  1. Select a bike you are comfortable riding. It needs to be in good working order. Equip your bicycle with a bell or horn and reflectors.

  2. Wear a helmet, CSA approved. Injuries happen and helmets can reduce the severity of the injury.

  3. Plan your route. You will need to balance safety, convenience and aesthetics. Plan several routes for different moods. Safety first.

  4. Test your route on a day off. You learn the route, test your equipment and learn how long the ride takes. Leave time to cool down or change clothing.

  5. Select light-coloured cycling clothes to make yourself visible.

  6. Plan your work attire. Store a wardrobe at the office or carry clothes rolled in a towel to reduce wrinkling.

  7. Get bike saddlebags (panniers) or a backpack for clothing, papers and snacks especially for longer rides.

  8. Buy a lock. Learn where to park and how to use the lock for maximum protection.

  9. Install lights for winter or night riding. With a variety on the market, choose the one that matches your situation.

  10. Be prepared with bad weather gear. It is best if it is designed for cycling.
